郭富城在電影《天亮之前》飾演賭徒，日前表示從十年前拍攝《父子》開始，每次挑戰演出生活裡沒有、非常艱難的角色，這種受虐般的自我探索，突破演戲的框框，讓他從偶像天王成為真正的演員。他2005、2006年分別以《三岔口》的落魄警員，《父子》的賭徒父親，蟬聯兩屆的金馬影帝，躍升為實力派演員。
他說，當時《父子》的導演譚家明建議他「一定要選更難的角色演」，他始終記得這句話，並不斷刷新角色難度。「在舞台上，我是歌手郭富城，在電影裡，我會忘記我是誰。」他會看角色的發揮空間，願接受所有的挑戰。
「我不怕失敗，用心演好每個角色，我希望這個人物有血有肉能觸動大家。」他認為，電影好玩的地方，就是可以重複不同的性格與人生，「做演員，真的太幸福了。」合演的楊子姍說：「他為演出這個角色準備很多，當他裝扮完，看到第一眼時真的相信他就是劇本裡的人。」
